IT Job Profiles in Mauritius – 2007
I have recently compiled a list of IT job profiles in Mauritius. These jobs are currently being undertaken by past UoM students in leading IT companies in Mauritius. The names of the persons and the company have not been mentioned for obvious reasons.
This compilation gives prospective IT graduates an apercu of the duties and responsibilities that they will be called upon to take and the tools and technologies that they will experience with.
I would like to thank all my friends and past students who have willingly provided these valuable information.

I think its important to mention that salary isn’t the only thing to look in a job profile, Job satisfaction also is important.. so don’t choose a job base only on salary coz you might get bored very quickly..

I agree with u viccks that salary is not the only thing to look at, but for me, I think it’s among the first criteria to look at. Definitely Job satisfaction is also very important, but who will work for a very small salary and yet be satisfied? He might starve to death if he’s in mauritius where all prices are on the rise :p
Very informative post…Watched a tv doc about careers in the IT sector about 2 years ago, but it was mainly for the USA I think and I wondered if it was possible to have one for mauritius. And here it comes in the form of a blog post :p

having a boring job will a high salary isn’t among my priorities.. a place where i can learn anduse new technologies, work on big projects is what i will look for..
anyway i guess it depends on the person and basically i think job preference varies wih age..
being young and dynamic one may choose to take risks with his or her career.. but as we grow older.. we tend to go more towards stable ones..

Well, I think most people are doing CSE related stuffs these days thinking of the salary they might get… Not really many people do these because they appreciate the domain or whatever… Just ask in your class how many really like the field and you’ll get your answer… Personally, I do agree with vicks, job satisfaction would be the priority… If you got job satisfaction, it would boost your performance, and you’ll ultimately get recognised for it and get promotions and consequently pay rises I suppose.
Nice post… We now got some realistic figures and tasks for IT related jobs.

Please note that job satisfaction is very important, especially for IT related jobs. Very often you will be required to work overtime (up to midnight) without any additional pay, then if do not like what you doing life can be very frustrating. Salary is an important factor tough as it contribute to the status of the work you are doing. However, for the first job, the salary should not be the prime factor, instead the exposure and experience that you will get is lot more important – note there is high mobility (changing jobs) in IT job market and with experience you high bargaining power – then you can expect very high salary.

I was browsing the Internet for Cisco Jobs and came across IT jobs in Mauritius,
well i was born in Mauritius and moved to South Africa 12 years ago. I’ve been working
in IT Industry for the past 6 years now and through these years i have gained a lot of experience and would one day love to return home and work. I am currently in the

I have worked with many different clients and i am very lucky to have work with one of the major IT companies in South Africa Like Business ConneXion and SITA, but i am now with UCS Solutions. I wanted to ask a question about the development of IT in Mauritius, i see a lot of Jobs here advertised but they mostly programming and analyst Jobs. Please can you let me know if there are jobs in the field of “CISCO Internetworking,CISSP,Microsoft Servers “Exchange,SQL,MS SQL, SAP,ORACLE,DB2,ISA Firewall, WLAN,WAN,LAN” and will there be a requirement of people with skills in these field mentioned above. I was very pleased to have found out that Mauritius has 1 CCIE “Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert” that’s awesome and i hope one day soon i can be the second one..which means i will have to move back to Mauritius which i would in a flash. I love Mauritius…and miss it so much.

I think wat this page proves is that one shouldnt just follow the masses. learning the .net framework is ok, just as is learning Java or pearl or python. Fact is, where there is too much supply the price goes down. no1’ll get much of a pay by just learning .net or java basics. Jumping on these things isnt the solution, u’ll have to be really good there to make a difference. I prefer doing something that pleases me,with something im totally sure of (in my case J2EE ;-p) What really is important is to keep learning, bettering one’s skills. In the IT field, knowledge lifetime is 3-5 years; in mechanical engineering it’s 45 years, this means that wat you learn today in IT will be obsolete in 6 years’ time.
Uni teaches just the basics of computing skills, n the final year projects usually wouldnt stand the test of professional software testing. Wen i did my project i thought “Wow!”, bt now i laugh at the mistakes i made there…To be a good programmer one needs to know the api’s inside out, plus know how to use the structures. A degree is just the first step. Once on the job market, therz a lot more than that that counts. but foremost is job satisfaction.

i do agree with everybody there. i went for an interview last year at Cybercity during my visit to mauritius. but we need to agree it is like a joke out there. there is not technical challenge for the cisco professional in mauritius as yet. it looks like a waste of resources so far.

If you have knowledge and contacts then i would prefer to work for myself. Nowadays, where circumstances are, if we don’t have our own business then we won’t go far in life.
I recommend everyone to have an online business and see how you can earn easily.
I have done a lot of SEO for many websites and i can tell you that a website itself can make you earn more than $500 (R15, 000) per month if it is fully optimized and well advertised.
So what if you have 5+ websites?

Hi every body,
I feel very disapointed when I see all your salaries, I live in France and I earn 2500€ by month. I am a Java/JEE 5 and .Net technologies Engineer, and I spend about 37 hours by week at work (40 hrs max).
I am very angry when I see lots of American and European big companies winning lots of money where lots of you are earning less than 500€ by month, you are doing the same job as us. Ok it is a great thing to have good times at job and having experience, but how can you survive with less than 500€ a month? Are you eating less than European? I don’t think so. Don’t you need a house to sleep, eat, wash, clothes, having children…?
Well I know that if you refuse the job someone else will take it, and if the salaries are augmented, the companies will go and see somewhere else, it is the law of economy. Very bad thing!
I hope you’ll earn all of you more money than now, I know that for some you life conditions are not that Frenchs are thinking : the paradise is hiding lots of misery, my family is living in Mauritius (I am a Mauritius citizen) I know what I am talking about.

The commitment toward work and career does take a toll on mauritian salary, compare to north american due mainly to $. Due to the following social factors.
The local or offshore companies can pay for higher rate, however knowing the expenses for rent utilities etc are shared by our extended family structure, these companies does take avantage of this.
The bargaining power for skilled worker is low due to the fact that new graduate does accept lower salary and offset the whole salary structure.
Evenif work harder , no formal compensation or career growth.
Stigma of our delivery potential specially further down the career path.
Cutting down on social life for career benifit not existent.
Profession not as respect as other engineering or service group.

im very sad having noticed that there is a need for some kind of “backing” to get a job even though i know that some of these people do not have a single certification and just get the job easily while others are struggling to get one…

How will someone get a job in it if they
don’t have experience which obviously employers ask for
at least 3 years…we see a lot of beginners do get stuck but they have all certs and training.please someone explain this to me??

I’ve recently applied for a job in Mauritius as a Business Objects Developer. I have been working in Australia for 6 yrs now and have been working with various technologies. I was amazed to find out how many IT people in Mauritius are a lot less than what I would think is a median salary. I think there needs to be a controlling body which would classify each and every jobs in IT to have a minimum salary. My analysis from the cost of living in mauritius would be around the 60 to 70k MUR per month. I have noticed that a lot of those IT companies only pay 3,500 MUR per month which is very low for travelling expenses. Imagine that filling up your petrol tank once is around 2,000 to 2,500 rupees. How can one pay only 3,500 rupees when the government pays MUR 8,690 per month.
I think that all IT professionals should join an association which would set standards in Mauritius.
There needs to be a revolution in this sector as we as professionals in IT in mauritius are well under paid!

Ciao all brothers and sisters, I’ll let you make your own judgment: I work in a major European city, no formal university qualification but self taught in data analysis, vb programming, applications analyst, business management and loads of managerial and analytical experience in actual work environment and all due to tenacity, dedication and will to learn on the job. I command around Euro 5000 a months with all perks including company car, and other benefits as I work for a global corporation.
Conclusion: I believe the IT sector in Mauritius need to scale up and be a recognised sector! I let you decide….
